If you’re working on an apartment or a building where there’s practically no space to do otherwise, then it’s fine. However, if you are starting from scratch there is no reason in the world where this needs to happen.
Beside the smell, having a toilet in a place where everyone in the lounge will all see when you go in and when you come out and also hear everything that happened is not a very good one.
Having a toilet inside your living room is not bad - it’s how you access it and that’s where the architect is wrong. He needs to find a way to create some sort of procession or privacy to the path accessing this room. That’s why you’re engaging him in the first place.
