Ever since our last media wall project (https://www.kobocity.com/d/244-how-to-install-large-and-expensive-tvs-on-hollow-walls), a lot of diy enthusiasts have asked me to do a how-to video of a modern wooden slat wall.

I have seen many different styles (plain wood against a white wall, hdf high gloss boards on painted wall…).

In this short DIY project, I’d be showcasing something slightly different from the norm. I want to create a feature slat wall and I absolutely love black accent walls but not an entirely wall black. So I’m creating a black feature wall with stained wood slats!

Is this cost effective to alternative wall finishings (stucco, Venetian plaster, wallpaper, mural, 3D wall etc) available out there?

The most important part of any DIY project is justifying the cost of a proposed design/solution especially when you’re on a tight-string budget.

This diy project is no exception.

The cost of wood Is starting to add up. Therefore, we decided to use packing case as a cost effective alternative to pressure treated timbers for the slat.

Let’s Start By Determining The Amount of Wood Required.

In order to determine how much wood this project will require, I had to do a rough sketch of the design (which oddly is one of my favorite parts of my projects). I wanted my slats and spacing to be the same width.

On this project, I decided on 1″ wood slats and spaces in between. So, I divide the width of the wall we are installing the slats by two to get the total number of slats that I would need for this project.

Sanding the Wood

It’s a busy week for me so I couldn’t do much on the DIY project until yesterday.

I decided to sand the cut edges of the woods to get rid of the rough edges. I had my black and decker sander orbital sander

Having sanded off the rough edges, the next thing to do is to stain the woods and I’m using my favourite wood stain colour - ‘walnut’
